Pride Month
June is Pride Month! Starting after the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969, LGTBQ+ Pride Month has been celebrated to commemorate years of protests and struggle as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities fought for equality and civil rights. Pride Month also honors LGBTQ+ individuals for their advocacy, contributions, and accomplishments.
While organized efforts for LGBTQ+ rights date back to 1924, the Stonewall Uprising was the catalyst of the movement. On June 28, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular spot for young queer folks, arresting employees and harassing and assaulting patrons. Nearly 400 witnesses heckled the police and threw debris at them, and as a result, the police lost control of the situation. The following nights were filled with protests and demonstrations of LGBTQ+ fighting against discrimination and fighting for equality.
HIV Long-Term Survivors Day is also celebrated during Pride Month, on June 5. This day honors long-term survivors of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and raises awareness of their needs and journeys. June 5, 1981, is considered the start of the AIDS epidemic, as it is when the CDC first reported on five cases of a mysterious disease affecting young gay men. HIV Long-Term Survivors (HLTS) make up about 25% of all people living with HIV and AIDS and they represent a diverse group of people diagnosed with HIV before the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in 1996.
Learn more about HIV Long-Term Survivors Day and get involved in the conversation for advocacy and awareness here.
Also, be sure to support your local Pride Center of VT by attending events or making a donation! Additional community Pride celebrations can be found below!
Juneteenth
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, with the intent to free all enslaved people. However, celebration was limited, as the Proclamation wasn’t put into effect on land that the Confederates still controlled. The language of the Emancipation Proclamation also did not abolish slavery in Union states. In Galveston Bay, Texas, people would continue to be enslaved until June 19, 1865, when Union military forces arrived freeing over 250,000 enslaved people. This day would be marked as the end of slavery, and the following year, Black Americans would celebrate "Jubilee Day" on June 19. The holiday spread throughout the nation and became what we know today as “Juneteenth”.
