BX’ 23 was a hit!
On February 25th, we hosted The Black Experience at the Flynn Theater in Burlington, VT. As we celebrated Vermont’s Black lived experience, we were joined by Christal Brown, our emcee, and Angela Davis and Dr. Tricia Rose, who led our fireside discussion. We also enjoyed performances from Philadanco, Rajnii Eddins, Harmony Edosomwan, Michael “Mikahely” Rakoyo Razafy, Toussaint St. Negritude, Brittany “Beamer” Morgan Wallace, Jolivette Anderson-Downing, and cRAIG mITCHELL!
BX’23 Health Event
February is Heart Health Month and as we also celebrated BX, we also addressed health disparities and inequities that affect Black communities. Right before BX took place, we were also able to provide community health screenings for various health conditions, in partnership with the University of Vermont Health Network. Attendees had access to free health screenings for high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes, as well as other information on healthcare resources.
nu-education:
Women’s History Month
As we enter Women’s History Month, here are some statistics you may not have known about gender inequality. Disparities exist between men and women, but that gap also varies among different racial groups.
Only 6 countries give women the same legal rights as men: Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Sweden (Social Justice Resource Center).
The Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963 in the US. At the time, women were paid 59 cents for every 1 dollar men were paid. Since then the wage gap has narrowed to .82 cents for every 1 dollar men are paid (Social Justice Resource Center).
Vermont had one of the smallest gender wage gaps in 2021 ($0.09), while Wyoming had the largest ($0.35) (National Women’s Law Center).
In Canada, women of color make 59% of what white men make (Canadian Women’s Foundation).
The United States is the only developed country without paid maternity leave (Social Justice Resource Center).
Belonging to a union reduces the gender gap by 50% (Social Justice Resource Center).
